Leaders look for upsides

Are you a leader?
Are you able to remain resilient no matter what is going on in your world or organisation/
Do you look for upsides?

True leaders don't just see problems, they look for upsides. They find the positives even during a storm or hard time. Leadership is about much more than giving orders, managing employees’ time and making schedules, meeting KPIs or conducting performance reviews; it’s a role that requires deep self awareness and a wide range of skills and behaviours. We have to look for how we remain calm and strategise during difficult times.

Positive organizational leadership is an area of focus within positive organizational psychology that looks at how leaders influence the organization itself. It addresses topics such as positive deviance on an organizational level, organizational citizenship behaviors (ie: constructive behaviors that demonstrate loyalty, commitment, and a willingness to beyond the standard), positive-focused change management, and other high-level ways that positive leaders can impact an organization now and in future.

There are about as many positive leadership styles out there as there are leadership books, styles such as authentic leadership (characterized by four factors: self-awareness, relational transparency, internalized moral perspective, and balanced processing), visionary leadership, servant leadership (Robert Greenleaf) and affiliative leadership (Lifestyles Inventory) – in a nutshell leaders who create a positive ripple effect in the workplace.

So what does positive leadership look like in action? It looks like leaders who care, empower and support their employees. For example, a leader who cares will respond to a rare mistake from their an employee with curiosoty and compassion rather than blame. An effective positive leader will also take the time to talk to the employee to see if he or she is struggling with something that’s not immediately obvious.

A leader who empowers their employees is one who gives them as much power and self-determination as possible. Does that sound like you?
